Mission Statement

VCLC’s mission is to enable adults to achieve personal goals and very young children to achieve pre-literacy skills through literacy services provided to families free of charge.

Vision Statement
We envision a Valencia County in which all residents have the literacy skills they need to achieve their own dreams.

Core Values
--
We serve residents of Valencia County with low literacy and/or limited English-language skills.

--We are committed to the use of volunteers to provide instruction.

--We value quality instruction that is centered on Learners’ Own Goals.

--We support the Adult Learner in all his/her capacities as a Community Member, Family Member, and Worker.

--We support Adult Learner Leadership.

--We believe that the ability to read is critical to personal freedom and the maintenance of a democratic society.

--We work to assist other organizations  who are committed to a literate society.

Volunteer Tutoring

Since 1987, VCLC has provided FREE Volunteer Tutoring for adults. VCLC tutors are fully certified by ProLiteracy America and help adults learn how to read and non-English speakers learn how to speak English. We also provide help with Citizenship, Basic Math, and Pre-GED Studies. We provide both one-to-one and small group instruction that lets the student learn at his or her own pace with confidentiality assured. For more information on Volunteer Tutoring, call Bob Bishop at 925-8935 or e-mail at bbishop@valencialiteracy.org.

BOOK Readers

Our Books Open to our Kids (BOOK) Readers read to children and their families in First Choice Community Healthcare and WIC Clinics in both Belen and Los Lunas. The medical personnel then advise the parents on the value of reading to children, giving them a new children’s book. For more information on BOOK Readers, call Irene Gogal at 999-9877 or e-mail igogal@valencialiteracy.org
