Mission Statement

VCLC’s mission is to enable adults to achieve personal goals and very young children to achieve pre-literacy skills through literacy services provided to families free of charge.

Vision Statement

We envision a Valencia County in which all residents have the Literacy skills they need to achieve their own dreams and to enhance the quality of their lives.

Core Values

  • We serve residents of Valencia County with low literacy and/or limited English-language skills.
  • We are committed to the use of volunteers to provide instruction.
  • We value quality instruction that is centered on Learners’ Own Goals.
  • We support the Adult Learner in all his/her capacities as a Community Member, Family Member, and Worker.
  • We support Adult Learner Leadership.
  • We believe that the ability to read is critical to personal freedom and the maintenance of a democratic society.
  • We believe that as our culture becomes more complex and dependent on technology, Literacy becomes ever more basic to survival and the achievement of one’s potential.
  • We work to encourage and assist other organizations and individuals who are committed to a literate society.

Getting to Know the Literacy Board

    President Roberta Scott

Many people know Roberta Scott as former President of the Valencia County Chamber of Commerce, as Manager of the Small Business Development Center (SBDC), and as a Rotarian. But, not everyone knows how committed she is to Literacy.

“Literacy is one of my soap box issues,” Roberta says. “I have grandchildren, and I see young men and women who cannot read to their children. They’re missing so much. Some of the happiest times of my life have been reading to my children.”

Roberta also stresses the importance of reading to the business community. “It’s difficult to start a business if you can’t read,” she says. “You need to read to write a business plan, get a loan, etc. It’s imperative.”

She points out that it can be dangerous as well when employees can’t read or speak English. “I remember a skit I saw by Adult Basic Education,” she says, “where someone was standing under a ‘No Smoking--Explosives’ sign lighting up a cigarette.” Roberta believes it’s best to be bilingual, but that people must know English to become productive members of our society.

She goes on to say, “When my children were young, and to my grandchildren now, I give books.” Many thanks to Roberta for her Leadership in Literacy!
