Imagine coming to America with high hopes for a bright future and not being able to read or write English in order to get a job. Imagine not having the reading skills needed to pass the GED test so you could go to college and make a better life for your family. Or, what if your parents never read to you at home, so you don’t realize how important it is to read to your children?
Thanks to the many volunteers of the Valencia County Literacy Council (VCLC), dreams can come true. Without these generous people, Valencia County would be a very unhappy place for some of us. VCLC’s volunteers give their time, patience, and knowledge to help their community and its members.
For over 20 years, VCLC’s volunteers have been tutoring Valencia County residents in Basic Literacy (Reading), English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Citizenship, Basic Math, and pre-GED. VCLC also recruits Volunteer BOOK Readers to read to children in local low-income medical clinics.
